Social Anxiety: The Highly Sensitive Empath's Nightmare

Feeling Energy can be Overwhelming

The holiday season brings with it a bountiful nest of social opportunity, wrought with family hugs, well wishes, and shared meals. For most, this is a joyous occasion; for others - such as the highly sensitive Empath - this is a hellish nightmare. This is social anxiety to the highly sensitive Empath. On one side is the desire to feel the happiness and joy of being among loved ones; on the other side is the overwhelm of emotion and fear that one has to put on a happy face while feeling the darkest emotions of those present.

Growing up, my experience was more like the latter. Attending many social events with family friends and finding oneself amongst dozens of social butterflies at once, it took every ounce of willpower to step into such an environment. I can't tell you how many times I tried to get out of it - begging my parents to "please let me stay home!" As a youth the overwhelm made me physically and mentally sick. Even into my university days, I felt a sense of disgust in most social situations, unknowingly entering these without the proper boundaries or energetic supports.

Then I found Reiki. I found energy healing. I found my personal spiritual practices. And thus I found more control in such possibly energetically intense scenarios. The realizations that all is energy and that humans carry energetic signatures that can be translated into emotions, thoughts and feelings/sensations, led me understand that as a highly sensitive (empathic) person, it was my reading into peoples' shit. So as the knowledge and understanding expanded around how I pick up and read peoples' energy, so did my ability to set energetic boundaries and become more of an observer rather than a victim to the never-ending energy of others.


So how do reduce the overwhelm of Social Anxiety as an Empath?

This is why learning how to manage your energy is so important. Finding balance and learning how to clear the energy field (aura) or your energy channels (chakras) and meridians can be so potent. Reiki is one way that supported me in learning how to clear and support my energy as well as hold space for others, without carrying their wounds.


Practicing mindfulness and meditation can support you with becoming the observer of energy in your world. These practices promote living in the present moment without attachment (equanimity). When you can become more mindful of your day-to-day life, you are better able to be aware of any disruptions in energy and also differentiate between your personal energy and that of the collective or other humans in your physical or energetic spaces. There is power and freedom in being aware of your day and you will find more ease within this practice.

Learning magickal methods of energy clearing and protection has been paramount on my path. Practices such as the Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram (LBRP) or using ceremony to clear space and call upon the Universal powers can be life-altering and also promote a sense of peace as you align to the Higher Vibrations of the Divine Source. Wearing a talisman for protection or guarding your space by calling in the archangels are just a couple ways to amplify this sense of balance for the socially anxious Empath.


Keep the Faith

Wherever you may be on your spiritual journey as an Empath, know that you are going to continue to perfect and align with your personal truth and wellness practices. Does social anxiety go away completely - I don't think so. But what I do believe is that we become more and more aware and able to clear what does not align with us and work on upleveling what wants to be seen and healed. Keep the faith and know that you are not in this alone.
